He is currently Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology and Venereology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Professor Sharma is a renowned teacher and researcher in the field of Dermatology and Venereology and a recipient of two Indian Council of Medical Research awards for his work in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy. He received Dr. R V Rajam Oration by National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 2005. He was honored with award of excellence and Dr. MA Wali Oration for 2007 by the Indian Association for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS. He was the National President of Indian Association for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS in years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003.
